Perimenopause & Menopause Q&A

What is perimenopause?

Perimenopause is the transitional phase that leads up to menopause. During this time, your body begins to produce less hormones, which can cause hormone levels to fluctuate.

Perimenopause often begins in your 40s, but it can start earlier for some people. This stage can last several years as your body gradually moves toward menopause.

Hormone levels change during perimenopause, so it’s possible to notice new symptoms or changes in your menstrual cycle. Your periods may become irregular, lighter, or heavier than usual.

While these changes are a natural part of aging, they can still affect how you feel physically and emotionally.

What is menopause?

Menopause is diagnosed when you’ve gone 12 consecutive months without having a period, signaling the end of your reproductive years. It occurs when your ovaries stop releasing eggs, and your hormone production declines significantly. Most women reach menopause between the ages of 45 and 55.

Although menopause is a normal stage of life, the hormonal changes that occur can lead to a variety of symptoms. For some women, these symptoms are mild, while others may experience more noticeable disruptions to their daily routines, sleep, mood, and overall comfort.

What are the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause?

Hormonal changes during perimenopause and menopause can affect many parts of your body. Some of the most common symptoms include:

  • Hot flashes and night sweats that interrupt sleep
  • Irregular periods or changes in menstrual flow
  • Mood swings, irritability, or anxiety
  • Sleep problems or difficulty staying asleep
  • Low libido or vaginal dryness
  • Brain fog or trouble concentrating
  • Weight gain or changes in metabolism

Not every woman experiences the same symptoms, and the intensity can vary. However, these changes are often related to shifting hormone levels during this stage of life.
